Yotto and Joris Voorn are two of my favourite artists and when Joris Voorn rolled out his version of Yotto's Walls, I loved it. The trouble is; I couldn't play it. It didn't fit in the sets because it didn't have enough ooomph, enough wallop. So this version, which is actually the second remix I've done, isn't really a remix at all. It's a ... beefing up. New drums, extra sounds, slightly overdriven - you get the idea.

The original is amazing, I strongly encourage you listen and pick it up and you explore the work of both Yotto and Joris.


Walls

I'm enjoying making piano tracks at the moment and from some experimentation this came out. The vocal is AI (because who can afford a professional singer) and it does a reasonable job. Powerful In Love has a single drop, lots of pianos and has these string uplifters that remind me of the 90s.

One of my strongest DJing memories is playing a bootleg version of Prince's Controversy in Pacha, London in ~2005. It was an absolute belter of a record. It had the ability to straddle tougher sets and more accessible ones. It was universally liked and that pays homage to Prince's original.

This version is effectively the regurgitation of that same sample from 20 years ago and beefed up. There are multiple versions of the same track at play here giving a result that can be played in sets. There is a non "mean" version, which is far more accessible also.


Controversy

Looking at the tracklist, this looks sickenly commercial. Something you might hear at Yates' or Chicagos' party bar on a Friday night. Well, yes, but no. It was made for my brother, who at the time celebrated his 40th birthday and the idea was to visit as many eras as possible through his life. It didn't really work like that, but it is eclectic enough. All the tracks are not the originals; not a one. Each one is beefier and housey to at least bring some credibility. Don't get me wrong, it's cheese madness here, but it's not completely cheesy.

I don't like some of the tracks I picked; looking at you Visage and Sting. I don't think they fit. Also, the George Michael accapella isn't in key with the intro - this is because it was two separate tracks pushed together live and only after starting did I realise they didn't really go; alas!

Well well. This was quite the surprise. The vocal came from an AI generator and then with the addition of a piano and a wobbly distorted bassline, it became this throwback funky house track with Solardo vibes. I think it might be a bit of a banger, it's catchy, melodic and the drop does a good job of slapping you in the gob.

You Got Me Good

This was a spin-off of the original and because I had the stems, I did a slight variation with a more "warehouse/rave" beat and a tiny breakbeat section.


This was a spun-off of the Warehouse Mix. I had the stems and just wanted something a bit more raw. The second drop has more of a harder, raw edge to it which I quite liked.

Back to 1999 and a bit of Craig David Bo Selecta vibes...

Inspired by nostalgia for the disco funky house era of early 2000 and the hard-edge beaty drops of now, Dare Me is a combination of approximately 8 tracks and includes samples from Vintage Culture, Pointer Sisters, Faithless and Kibou. Heavily shortened for playing out and with only a single drop, Dare Me allows a glimpse of that funky house and disco throwback in amongst something a lot tougher.
